Common Juniper Juniperus communis

Natural Habitat:	Sandy, rocky outcrops and banks, open woods, open fens, clearings, and old fields.
Tree Form:	Evergreen conifer shrub with no trunk; many branches near the ground but can be a small tree with ascending to spreading branches.

Wildlife:	Blue, berry-like female cones provide winter food for birds and mammals. Male cones are catkin-like.
Notes:	Easy to transplant and grow; good ground cover even on stony or sandy sites. Does best in sandy to gravel soils and is pH adaptable but 5.0 - 6.5 is best. Wind tolerant and grows on poor sites but is slow. Not as heat tolerant as other Juniperus species. Once established little maintenance required. Highly valued as an ornamental but is shade intolerant.
