Choke Cherry Prunus virginiana

Natural Habitat: Riverbanks, roadside, fencerows, edges of woods, open woods and swamps often with Trembling Aspen and White Birch.
Tree Form:Tall shrub or very small tree, often multi-stemmed. Upright branches and oval rounded crown. Trunk often crooked. Almost as wide as tall.

Wildlife: Dark red-purple astringent fruit eaten by many species of birds (and makes tasty jelly). Larval food source for several butterfly species.
Notes: White flowers on an elongated stalk resemble a bottle brush. As a specimen tree, in a shrub border, open woodland garden, bird garden, screen or informal hedge. Short-lived but fast growing (a good starter tree). Grows best on rich soils but is common on all types, including poorer or drier soils.
