Natural Habitat: Thickets on bottomlands and hillsides, edges of woods, roadsides, fencerows and abandoned farmland and sandy, gravelly shores.
Tree Form:Small tree or thicket-forming shrub. Branches start low down on trunk. Can be distorted like an apple tree. Irregular rounded crown, sometimes flat-topped or narrow-headed.

Wildlife: Fruit useful to birds in winter. Larval food source for Striped Hairstreak (Satyrium liparops)
Notes: Use this attractive small tree in informal plantings where it will get full sun. White, showy, fragrant flowers appear before the leaves. Yellow to red fruit is tough and sour until the first frost when it becomes edible. Can be used to make jam. Grows on a variety of soils, especially calcareous soils with pH 6.0 - 7.5.
