Natural Habitat: Shores, riverbanks, open rocky woods.
Tree Form:Low to medium sized shrub, much branched and spreading, open rounded crown. Can be as wide as tall.

Wildlife: Not much used.
Notes: Easy to grow and is cold and drought tolerant. Female flowers are greenish-yellow; male flowers are brown. Although juicy and rich in iron, the ruddy or yellowish spherical fruit (about the size of a pea) is considered bitter and inedible. Silver-green leaves. Red or yellow roots have nitrogen-fixing nodules. Grows on sandy, calcareous rocks and is tolerant of poor soils. Alkaline pH.
