Natural Habitat: Deep, rich well-drained uplands and moist lowlands.
Tree Form:Medium-sized tree with a long, branch-free trunk. The crown is short, narrow-topped and rounded with ascending branches. Almost as wide as tall.

Wildlife: Larval food source for Banded Hairstreak (Satyrium calanus). Edible seeds for wildlife but kernels are bitter and considered inedible.
Notes: Large taproot makes transplanting difficult. Good upland tree; needs dry or moist loamy soil but tolerates clay soils. Roots secrete juglone, which inhibits the growth of other plants
