Understorey in mixed forests, edges of woods, thickets, clearings.

Wildlife:
Less attractive to birds than to mammals such as chipmunks and red squirrels, but makes a good nest shrub.
Notes:
Plant in informal situations. Flowers in catkins appear before the leaves in Spring. Does best on well-drained, loamy soils but can grow in wet conditions. The beaked nuts are edible and in the past were much more commonly eaten by humans.
