Venomous! The Northern Short-Tailed Shrew is one of only a VERY small number of mammals in the world that are venomous. The venom is contained in its saliva and is actually similar to Cobra venom. When prey is near, the shrew will jump and bite it. The venom soon paralyzes the prey and then it can be eaten! Don't worry, these tiny little fellows can't kill you. If you are bitten, you'll only experience a bit of swelling and irritation. What a paralyzing fact!
